This genogram project reiterated the fact that I come from a family with an excellent work ethic. The general consensus in my family is that work is a means of providing for your family and achieving success. From owning a plumbing company to the classroom, it is important to work hard, do your job well, and enjoy what you do. I am proud to say that I inherited my work ethic from my family. I have held a job since I turned sixteen, I worked full time throughout college as well as during my student teaching, and now that I am settled in my career, I am a successful teacher, team leader, extracurricular activity sponsor, and graduate student.
An interesting trend that I noticed on my genogram, which is apparent on my mother's side, is that the majority of the women in my family have chosen a career in education. My mother and grandmother were both teachers, and now my mother is an elementary school librarian. Additionally, many of my maternal cousins and other members of my extended family are educators, both male and female. From superintendents to principals to counselors to teachers, I come from a long line of educators!
Finally, and maybe most importantly, this project made me analyze who I aspire to be like in my family and why. I quickly answered that I have always wanted emulate my father, and the reason why was just as easily answered. My father has an amazing work ethic, he is successful in his career, and he enjoys his job. To me, this is the trifecta of success. My father works hard, he plays hard, and he has always made sure that my mother and I were provided for above everything else. He taught me to do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it, and my father not only believes this, he also lives it. (I truly believe that if more people lived by this motto, the world would be a better place!) This project not only encouraged me to express these aspirations, but I also shared them with my father. I am very proud to call my father "my Daddy," and I hope that if I have children someday, they can say the same thing about my work ethic.

It is amazing to see that most of your family completed college! My parents did not finish college, but they made it very clear that our education was important and encouraged us to attend college. Thanks to the my parents' hard work and dedication, my brother and I were able to earn a college degree. My parents are 100% supportive in my decision to become a school counselor. I'm looking forward to fulfilling my goal of becoming a professional school counselor and continuing to greatly impact students' lifelong journey!
ReplyDeleteTiffany,
ReplyDeleteSince I have known you, you definitely emulate the traits spoken of your father. You have one of the best work ethics I have seen and you truly have a passion for teaching and your students. You have even inspired me to make more time for reading and to instill the love of books in my own son. I know that your dad is proud to call you his daughter!
I read your blog several times and finally got to post. Great reflection. Thanks, Dr. H
